Crazy Nutrition Tips

The longer we’re in this field and the more people we talk with, the crazier the questions, tips, and suggestions we continue to hear.

But yesterday may have been the icing on the cake.

We’re at the doctor’s office yesterday.

And the nurse asked Kara how she is feeling.  Kara said "still nauseous."

The nurse says — "you’re never going to believe this, but the ONLY thing that works for nausea is eating CHEETOS!  I don’t know what it is in the Cheetos, but even the women in the office upstairs at Maternal and Fetal Medicine say the same thing.  And the BEST part — you don’t have to be pregnant, Cheetos work any time you’re nauseous."

So, out of all of that, you first probably picked up that ‘Team Mohr’ is expanding … and Ella is going to be a big sister later this year.

But getting away from that — Cheetos?  Really?

We looked at each other, bit our tongues, and just smiled and nodded.

Then we wondered — was it the MSG, dangerous trans fat, loads of salt, or maybe the Yellow #6 that had these "magical" anti nausea properties.

We both agreed the Cheetos themselves would make us sick — certainly wouldn’t ‘cure’ a thing!

Why is it that people cling to these old wives tails?  Is it that they want something to be true, like eating Cheetos may actually be good for you, or what?

Leave a comment on the blog — what’s the craziest bit of nutrition "advice" you’ve ever heard?  We’ll go through all the comments and will pick a winner for what we think is the "best" — the winner will get a FREE Copy of the 21 Day Fat Loss Jumpstart ($67 value) (JUST in time for Memorial Day, around the corner)

Drink Coca Cola if you got the flue.

    Eat toothpaste to stop cravings!

I have a real problem with the advice that the master cleanse is the only way to really lose belly fat. The idea of drinking that stuff and depriving your body for two weeks is crazy!

I think she confused Cheetos and Cheerios.

Hey, Congratulations on your new baby coming, that is exciting news. As for the crazy nutrition tips, I’ve heard a lot of them, but the cheetos I think takes the cake. Very funny.

Drink only coffee for two days straight to “shrink” your stomach. The caffeine in the coffee will help with the headaches you will get from not eating.

I once had a client who had convinced himself that peanut butter sandwich crackers (the orange colored ones no less) were a great source of protein and beta carotene.

Have french fries with diet cola ;-p. That cheetos thing really made my day:)))

I thought it was Ginger that was suppose to help with nausea…which is def. more healthy than cheetos! OYE!!! I dont know that I could have held back my laughter on that one.

I was once told that I could lose 10 lbs in 5 days and all I would have to do is drink a mixture of lemonade, tomato juice, grapefruit juice, and cayenne pepper 3x/day for 5 days to lose weight. It will work because it will cleanse your system.

First of all…EW! Second of all, obviously we all know why this is a bad idea…

Hi Stephanie! I don’t know about your drink mix, but I have seen lime and honey work wonders on people. It never worked on me for some reason, but my Mom’s friends tried it for a month and the results were astounding. All they “claimed” to take was the juice of 1 lime and 1 tsp of honey in 1/2 cup of warm water, before going for a 1-hour brisk walk. I saw then drop almost half their bulk in 30 days. I was left in a daze. And it still won’t work on me (which is why I say “claimed”)!! :-/

But that juice mix sounds refreshing! I would take it if I din’t have to avoid citrus juices!!

      Cheers!

Yeah but this beverage was all that they were to consume in the 5 days…that’s ridiculous…hello starvation mode leading to weight gain and then some when you add food back in. Complete silliness in my opinion!

        • Divi April 27, 2011 at 10:13 pm #

Hehee!! “Complete silliness” is a rather mild and polite way of putting it!! I have come across similar ones. All drink oriented. And some of the stuff would probably work as a good cleansing technique (read “make up puke your guts out”) !! But the lime and honey thing does not require that. Plus it is the green limes not the yellow lemons. I would suggest following your regular diet plan with it.

If you do happen to try it, I would be very interested in knowing the results if that would be okay with you.

          Cheers!

How about the old Italian tradition of eating pastina if you have a stomach ache? Meanwhile, the pastina is drenched in butter and grated cheese!

Drink an entire Carbo Force between EACH set of squats and deadlifts(8 total sets). Your muscles will absorb all the carbs because they are such heavy lifts and you won’t have to eat as much throughout the day. 3000+ calories consumed during a workout to lose weight! This was advice I received in 1990 and even in high school I knew this was idiotic.

I am a RD(SA) I saw a ypung fit guy who came to see me because he gained weight, while he was excercising & following an eating “plan” he developed for body building. When I took his diet history, I was schocked to discover that he ate a WHOLE GRILLED CHICKEN & a Energy drink for lunch! He read somewhere chicken build muscles…&the energy drink will. Supply the energy… Say no more!

I was eating a banana during the break of a very long and hot tennis match and my partner told me that I should never eat bananas because it has too much sugar. Her Weight Watcher’s counselor told her that

Arggggg, I HATE this one and hear it all the time!! Encouraging it was from her go to “expert”

      • Jeff April 27, 2011 at 9:05 pm #

I had a 600 lb. client tell me his Dr. told him to stay clear of bananas. Yes, 600 lbs. So sad that he feels jello is ok but bananas are bad.

I have had more than one client tell me that they drink a healthy drink. They tell me that “diet soda” is very healthy and should be drunk if you want to stay fit and healthy. This still drives me crazy!

I was told not to eat mushroom because they are dead matter and will end up killing me. My friend’s mother told him that and he was deathly afraid of eating mushrooms (without even trying them). He LOVES them now and he isn’t dead after 5 years of eating them!!

When I was pregnant I was told to take tylenol with diet coke for migraines.

I never heard of any crazy nutrition tales – I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! But I crack up when I hear people who are diabetic or close to diabetic stay away from healthier choices with natural sugars, but will go toward other foods that have all the bad stuff!!! Amazes me – will use any excuse to stay away from fruits and veggies

Congrats to both of you! I sometimes find myself craving Cheetos but I will try to fight that from now on…drat. And tell Kara Lucky Charms during the 1st trimester was my magical nausea cure! :)

Kara, I heard that taking extra calcium would help stop morning sickness. I think I’d try that before the Cheetos! The craziest diet advice I was ever given was to only drink OJ or water and eat nothing but plain saltine crackers and apples. Do this for 2 weeks and you’ll ‘tons’ of weight!

I’ve heard quite a few through the years. One of the craziest is; cheese clogs your intestines and you need a colonic to help flush it out.

The only food of that orange color should be a fruit or vegetables (oranges, mangos or squash).

My wife and I over heard in a “Souplantation” restaurant a father talking to his 3 daughters saying, “Make sure to not eat too much salad, you want to save room for dessert.” Our 14 year old daughter was with us and she about gagged on her food, first from shock and then from the laughter we could barely hold back. I think stupefied is the correct term.
