The Busy Family’s Guide to a Balanced Plate

Disclosure: I created this blog content in partnership with Nestlé’s Balance Your Plate Program. I was compensated for my work, and all opinions are solely my own. For additional information and resources from Balance Your Plate, visit www.nestleusa.com/balance
Last night Ella had guitar practice. Sophia had swimming. We had … all of that and just general “life.”
You get it. One thing we always hear from friends and clients is getting a balanced dinner on the table is tough because of time … or lack of.
But eating together is key. It’s key for health, connection and conversatio…

I Am Stupid

Yesterday while I was getting a snack ready for the girls after school, both girls were coloring at the kitchen counter.  Ella wrote something, looked up at me, then quickly look down and started erasing. But not before I saw the words she wrote.…

Why Don’t We Share? Good, Bad, Otherwise?

This past Sunday I got the chance to see Glennon Doyle Melton of Momastery speak in Indianapolis.  I’ve been a huge fan of hers for years, so the chance to sit in the same room with her and soak up some of  her wisdom and insight felt like magic.
She spent some time talking about social media. And how we can all be tricked into only presenting the shiny, happy sides of ourselves. We believe everyone has it more together than we do and so we don’t feel comfortable sharing our fears, concerns, or burdens.  So we stuff them down.
And when we lock in those fears and burdens, we also don’…

Helping You Keep Your Resolutions in 2016

The other day we had the TV on and all the discussion was the “best diets for 2016.”  Coincidentally, yesterday the new Dietary Guidelines were also released.  And, most importantly (please read with sarcasm), just the other day there was a lot of discussion about the “special” diet that Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen follow.  The question, then, is what the heck do you do to make smart eating decisions?
Of course this is the time of the year where most people resolve to do something … start exercise, start eating better, etc.  Unfortunately these resoluti…

How to Make an Epic Salad

Salads are my thing. If I had the time, I would choose to eat a salad for lunch and dinner.
And no, it’s not because “Salads are diet food.” It’s not even because they are so healthy.
It’s pretty much because salads allow you to have to the perfect combination of so many taste textures and sensations. Making them emotionally satisfying.
And you can also get a lot of volume on fewer calories. Making them physically satisfying.
It drives me crazy when someone dismisses the salad as a non-satisfying meal choice.
“Oh, I’ll just have a salad.”
Sala…

The Patina of Your Life

Over the last several months Chris and I have been shopping for things for the renovation of our new house: flooring, countertops, furniture. After years of living with furniture we’ve had since grad school, we are ready to have a Grown Up House.
You know what a Grown Up House means?
Yes, money. Lots of it. But besides money?
Care. Like showroom care. Like it’s never used care. Like impossible care.
The first kitchen table we picked out, the top was made out of concrete. Sounds durable, right? Except that you need to wipe up water stains immediately and avoid red wine stains as much as p…

The Squirrel Takedown

Ahhhh, connecting with nature.
The sounds of light rain falling on the lake, the feel of a cool breeze in the middle of summer…. and the shock of a squirrel running across your body when you’re sound asleep…
Yep, that’s how things are rolling here in the Adirondacks.
“Chris!  Wake up!  CHRIS!  Seriously!  WAKE. UP!!  There’s something in here!” Chris is sound asleep on the other side of the screened in sun porch on his own twin bed.  I’m all alone here and a creature is running over me like I’m it’s own personal fun park.

Are You Eating Enough Protein?

DISCLOSURE: I have partnered with STOUFFER’S® Fit Kitchen. I have received compensation and product for my participation, but my opinions are my own.
It doesn’t matter where I am in the world … if I’m talking nutrition, people always ask how much protein they should be eating.
It’s particularly true with guys. It’s not usually that they think they’re not eating enough, but that they think they need to eat more. Here’s the problem, guys (and ladies) are eating too much.
Well, too much … at dinner.
But today we’re focusing on just the guys because, after all, it is Men…

The 5 People You Spend the Most Time With

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. We are influenced by what we see, what we hear and what we experience.
If the people around us don’t value taking care of themselves, see the world through a negative filter, and believe the worst is to come…then it’ s likely we’ll begin to adopt that outlook too. Especially when we spend a lot of time with those people.
And yes…it’s occurred to me that I spend the majority of my time with a 3 1/2 and 6 year old who think saying the word poopy is funny…
